Two Boreholes Bring Relief to Drought-Hit Community in Northern Malawi
Rumphi District, Malawi — After months of severe water shortages during the 2025 dry season, residents of a small rural community in Rumphi are now gaining reliable access to clean water following the completion of two newly drilled boreholes.
The project, privately funded by Cornerstone International , was implemented over a two-month period and targeted villages that had been heavily affected by drought and limited water infrastructure.
Communities in northern Malawi have faced increasing challenges in recent years due to erratic rainfall and prolonged dry spells. In parts of Rumphi District, residents, particularly women and children were forced to travel long distances daily in search of water, often relying on unsafe sources.
Local leaders say the new boreholes are already transforming daily life, reducing the burden of water collection and improving access to safe drinking water.
According to project coordinators, the initiative was carefully planned and executed to ensure long-term sustainability. The two-month timeline included extensive pre-drilling assessments, hydrogeological surveys and technical studies.
Only after these few stages were completed did drilling begin, followed by installation of hand pumps and protective infrastructure to ensure durability and hygiene.
Even with three missed attempts with getting no water beds, the project had incorporated community engagement at every stage, with local residents involved in site selection and basic maintenance training. This approach is intended to ensure long-term ownership and sustainability of the water points but also served as a learning point identifying new ephemeral streams.
“Access to clean water is not just about infrastructure, it's about dignity, health, and opportunity,” a representative from Cornerstone International said. “These boreholes are designed to serve the community for years to come.”
With the two boreholes now operational, residents are expected to benefit from improved water access. Health workers in the area anticipate a reduction in waterborne diseases, while families will have more time to focus on education and livelihoods instead of water collection.
As climate pressures continue to affect rural communities across Malawi, initiatives like this highlight the importance of targeted, privately funded interventions in addressing urgent development needs.
