Cornerstone International Launches Women and Children's Shelter in Johannesburg
Johannesburg, South Africa — A new safe haven for vulnerable women and children has officially opened in Johannesburg , marking a significant step forward in the fight against domestic and intimate partner violence. The shelter, fully funded by the board of Cornerstone International along with private donors, aims to provide holistic care and long-term support for women seeking refuge and a fresh start.
Designed as more than just temporary accommodation, the facility offers a secure and nurturing environment for up to 12 families at a time. The shelter specifically supports women with young children, many of whom are escaping abusive situations and require immediate protection and comprehensive care.
Operating under the principle that safety and dignity come first, the shelter provides 24-hour security to ensure residents are protected at all times. In addition, a registered medical nurse is on-site around the clock, offering immediate healthcare support and monitoring the well-being of both mothers and children.
Beyond physical safety, the program places strong emphasis on emotional and psychological healing. Residents have access to counseling and trauma-informed care, recognizing that recovery from abuse extends far beyond immediate shelter.
“Understanding the relationship between caregiver and patient is at the heart of everything we do,” a spokesperson for Cornerstone International said at the launch. “This shelter is not just a place to stay—it is a place to rebuild lives.”
A key component of the initiative is its focus on long-term empowerment. The shelter works closely with residents to help them transition into the workforce, offering guidance, skills development, and support in securing employment.
By equipping women with the tools to become financially independent, the program aims to break cycles of dependency and vulnerability, enabling families to move forward with confidence and stability.
The project has been made possible through a combination of institutional backing and private donor contributions, reflecting a shared commitment to addressing gender-based violence and supporting survivors.
Cornerstone International and its affiliate partners have emphasized that the shelter forms part of a broader mission to promote the rights and welfare of individuals affected by domestic abuse.
While the facility currently accommodates a limited number of families, organizers say the model is designed for impact, offering intensive, personalized support that addresses immediate needs while laying the foundation for long-term resilience.
As South Africa continues to grapple with high rates of gender-based violence, initiatives like this shelter represent a critical intervention, providing not only protection, but also hope.
“This is a shelter and a safe haven,” the Foundation stated. “A place where women and their children can begin again.”
