SunDrum Pilot Project Shows Promise for Clean Energy Solutions in DR Congo

A pilot phase of the innovative SunDrum clean energy initiative has been successfully completed, marking an important step towards sustainable cooking and heating solutions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Conducted over nine weeks in September 2025, the pilot saw the deployment of six SunDrum units across the Haut-Katanga region. The systems ranging from single-plate and double-plate solar cookers to units equipped with integrated water boilers were installed in three households and three restaurants. This mix of users enabled the project team to assess performance across both domestic and small-scale commercial environments.

The pilot installations were distributed across multiple locations, including Kipushi, Kasenga and Likasi, with specific user sites in Kamoto, Imara, and Kabongo. By maintaining a structured user database, project teams ensured close monitoring, traceability, and consistent follow-up throughout the testing phase.

After the trial period, all prototypes were retrieved for detailed technical assessment and performance analysis. Early findings indicate that while the SunDrum systems performed effectively in real-world conditions, certain improvements are needed, particularly in strengthening the durability of solar panels to withstand the region's demanding environmental conditions.

User feedback played a central role in shaping the next phase of development. Both households and restaurant operators highlighted the benefits of the technology, while also identifying practical challenges. These insights are now guiding refinements aimed at improving resilience, efficiency, and long-term usability.

The pilot is one component of a broader innovation program supporting the SunDrum initiative. The funding covers extensive research and development, engineering design, manufacturing and prototyping, international logistics and deployment of specialized technical teams. It also includes monitoring and evaluation activities, as well as institutional support in collaboration with the DRC Social Fund.

While the pilot phase was limited in scale, it has provided critical validation of the SunDrum concept. The results confirm the technology's potential to deliver sustainable energy solutions in off-grid and resource-constrained settings, particularly in regions where access to traditional energy sources remains limited.

With key technical adjustments already identified, the project is now poised to move into its next phase—scaling up deployment and further refining the technology to meet local needs.

As the SunDrum initiative advances, it represents a promising step towards cleaner, more accessible energy solutions for communities across the Democratic Republic of Congo.
